AIEC headed north this year to Runsten Equestrian, just outside of Stockholm, for the 2023 edition of SRNC Sweden hosted by the Swedish Student Riders – a switch up from the usual venue of Lund Civila Ryttarförening, near Malmö, who played host to our student riders in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018.
While the event itself may have taken place at the end of July, the organising committee made sure to include some of the traditional Swedish “Midsommar” festivities during the Gala Dinner for all the international guests to experience. The quintessential flower headdresses were made and worn to accompany the songs and dance. But, thankfully, they omitted the pickled herring!
The competition itself saw a mixture of old and new faces, but it was our newbie riders who really stole the show. Not only were they newcomers, Jill McGettigan (Ireland), Julia Rieth (Germany), and Julia Salvall (Sweden) managed to pull off top three placings across each ranking – Salvall placing second in individual show jumping, Rieth winning the individual dressage title and placing third in individual combined, and McGettigan placing third in individual dressage and winning both the individual show jumping and individual combined titles. So watch out everyone, it looks like this trio of female student riders will be a force to be reckoned with in the future!
Unsurprisingly, it was Germany made it a clean sweep across each team ranking thanks to fielding such a strong team in Annika Dechert, Nele Lubina, and Julia Rieth. Ireland slotted into second in team combined, with Great Britain not far behind in third.
Livestream of all three days of the competition was provided by Clip My Horse, with commentary courtesy of Ireland’s Freddie Prichard, and is available to be rewatched from their archive here.
We now move to The Netherlands at the beginning of September, for the final leg of our Student Riding Nations Cup series before World Finals.
As always, a huge thank you must go to the many fantastic sponsors of this competition, many of whom are returning SRNC sponsors, and their loyalty to AIEC is greatly appreciated.
